The Miracle of Israel

"In that day I will raise up the booth of David that is fallen and repair its breaches,
and raise up its ruins and rebuild it as in the days of old." Amos 9:11

On May 14, 1948, the Jews declared independence for Israel. This was the first time in over 2000 years that Israel was both independent and united. This re-birth was the beginning of a recent chain of events foretold numerous times throughout the Bible. A glorious future for this nation lies yet ahead.

A Synopsis of Israel:

Again the word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness in my sight. So I poured out my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions. And wherever they went among the nations they profaned my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the LORD’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’ I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone. “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you have gone. I will show the holiness of my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the LORD, declares the Sovereign LORD, when I am proved holy through you before their eyes. For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land. Ezek 36:16-24

Jacob's descendants would regain control of Israel:

I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel, and they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant them on their land, and they shall never again be uprooted out of the land that I have given them, says the Lord your God. Amos 9:14-15

Israel would be brought back to life:

So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. Then he said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off. Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord. Ezek 37:10-14

Israel will be reborn in one day:

Before she was in labor she gave birth; before her pain came upon her she delivered a son. Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment? For as soon as Zion was in labor she brought forth her children. Isaiah 66:7-8

Israel would be re-established as a united nation:

Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. Ezek 37:21-22

The second Israel would be re-gathered from all corners of the world:

Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it shall no longer be said, As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt, but As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them. For I will bring them back to their own land that I gave to their fathers. Jer 16:14-15

The people of Israel would return to their own land:

And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. Ezek 34:13

God would watch over the people of Israel:

Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, and declare it in the coastlands far away; say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock. Jer 31:10

Israel will eventually repent and acknowledge their Messiah:

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. Zech 12:10

The prosperity and influence of Israel will be restored:

then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has scattered you. If your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there he will take you. And the Lord your God will bring you into the land that your fathers possessed, that you may possess it. And he will make you more prosperous and numerous than your fathers. Deut 30:3-5

The Two Question Test

This is what the Lord says - Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God. Who then is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and lay out before me what has happened since I established my ancient people, and what is yet to come - yes, let him foretell what will come. Isaiah 44:6-7

The Bible contains a record of things past, of things fulfilled, and of things yet future. No other so-called Holy Book authenticates itself like this. The scriptures identified above are but a small sampling of prophecies that pertain to Israel. Not mentioned in this short summary are the many other prophecies that point to the Messiah or that describe the succession of kingdoms, and so on..

I believe we are at a unique juncture in history. The re-establishment of Israel is no accident. Bible scholars and experts will sometimes disagree on the details when it comes to interpreting prophetic scriptures and aligning them with what we see happening around us. These fuzzy details will become less fuzzy as time progresses. One thing is clear though, Israel has had an important function and role in the past. Scripture also makes it clear that Israel will have an equally important function and role in the future. Here are a few web sites that I've found useful over the years:
