It's fairly easy to sit in judgment of first century Pharisees and their rigid observance of Old Testament laws. But I believe it's also possible for modern day Christians to fall into that same spirit of legalism in the observance of New Testament "doctrines".

ie. Obedience to an established set of rules - vs - obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The prophet Joel spoke of a time when God said He would "pour out [His] Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions".

The context of these verses are "the last days" (Joel 2:28-32). I believe we are starting to see more evidence of this in the persecuted church. John Bloom, who's spent some time with leaders in the underground church in the middle-east recently commented:

"The cessationism-continuationism debate is a moot issue for them. They regularly see the Holy Spirit do things we read about in the book of Acts... It was clear that all the revelatory and miraculous spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12–14 are a normal part of life for these believers — because they really need them."

I think that in the western church, because of the material, rational orientation of our culture, we've become numb to the leading of the Spirit. I suspect for many, being "led by the Spirit" is a euphemism for "belief and adherence to a set of doctrines". But this idea is contrary to what Paul taught:

"But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law." Gal 5:18

The presence and leading of the Spirit, is a defining characteristic of what it means to be a Christian:

"And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ." Rom 8:9

We are products of our environment. I believe Jesus had cultures like ours in mind when He said:

"You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked." Rev 3:17

On the flip side, He also encouraged this church to:

"buy from Me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me." Rev 3:19-20
