The immediate verses below seem to be the defining characteristic as we approach the "Day of the Lord". Recent court challenges continue to re-define what was once considered to be normal. And dysfunctional leadership seems to be the order of the day.

Why do the nations rage
     and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth take their stand
     and the rulers gather together,
against the LORD
     and against His Anointed One saying:
“Let us break Their chains
     and cast away Their cords.”
(Psalms 2:1-3)
It would be safe to assume that this general progression, rooted in secular humanism, will continue on its current path. But there will come a day when God will bring an end to the matter.
“You are My Son;
     today I have become Your Father.
Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,
     the ends of the earth Your possession.
(Psalms 2:7-8)
