The modern Gospel often says that if you're a Christian, you're all set; you can just rest in His grace. Paul the Apostle on the other hand, warned all Christians to: "Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith. Examine yourselves.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)

- Joel Richardson

I think that the doctrine of "Once Saved, Always Saved" could be one of the more pernicious doctrines in the modern church. This idea should be measured against some clear statements like these:

I am the true vine, and My Father is the keeper of the vineyard. He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit, and every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes to make it even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me.

I am the vine and you are the branches. The one who remains in Me, and I in him, will bear much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are gathered up, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving yourselves to be My disciples.

Jn 15:1-8

Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure. For if you practice these things you will never stumble, and you will receive a lavish reception into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

2 Pet 1:10-11

he who overcomes will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels.

Rev 3:5

But there is also comfort in knowing this:

Here is My Servant, whom I uphold,
My Chosen One, in whom My soul delights.
I will put My Spirit on Him,
and He will bring justice to the nations.
He will not cry out or raise His voice,
nor make His voice heard in the streets.
A bruised reed He will not break
     and a smoldering wick He will not extinguish;

He will faithfully bring forth justice.

Isaiah 42:1-3
