There is no substitute for focused time with the Lord. This is why Jesus was so deliberate about protecting it. Any mature Christian who desires to walk in the Spirit will tell you this. As sure as this principle is, it is easy to fall out of this practice.

The pattern is this:

  • When you start your day, avoid the urge to check your electronic devices - radio, TV, computers, phone, tablet - for news, email, messages, status updates, etc. Even when the sources are Christian. Make no compromises.
  • Instead - find your quiet place, with coffee in hand if so inclined, and quiet your mind. Pray, read His word deliberately and slowly. Stop and listen. Pray, read, listen. Record those thoughts that stand out in your mind. This is where the Holy Spirit teaches, testifies with your spirit (John 14:26, Rom 8:16). Then repeat. Over and over again. You'll know when you need to stop. It takes time and practice.

When you do this, your days will become more peaceful and anchored.

Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be moved; it abides forever.
As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the LORD surrounds His people,
     both now and forevermore.

Psalm 125:1-2
