And when the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!”

Then I looked and saw a pale green horse. Its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed close behind. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill by sword, by famine, by plague, and by the beasts of the earth.

Rev 6:7-8

For some important context, please read:

In my previous post, I describe the breaking of the first four seals on a scroll in the Revelation to John. The breaking of these seals release four consecutive horsemen. These horsemen release conditions on the earth. I explain why I do not believe that the breaking of these seals are:

  • describing discrete, self-contained judgments or are
  • describing the activity of the antichrist.

Using the above conventional approach can make the seals sound like four discreet events:

catastrophe A happens -> catastrophe B happens -> catastrophe C happens -> catastrophe D happens.

Instead, what the text seems to be describing, is an escalating and mutually reinforcing pattern.

From Preconditions to Systemic Failure

To understand where the Fourth Seal leads, we have to look at the momentum created by the first three horsemen:

  1. The 1st Seal (white horse): Conquering - describes a dramatic expansion of coercive power and institutional overreach on a global scale.
  2. The 2nd Seal (red horse): Removal of Peace - describes the systemic removal of peace—manifested as polarization, tribal division, and factional strife.
  3. The 3rd Seal (black horse): Economic violence - describes the wide-scale erosion of purchasing power, where access to basic staples becomes restricted while the wealthy are insulated.

As long as formal governance, global supply chains, and civic institutions maintain even a weak buffer, the system holds. But when divine restraint is further lifted, that buffer disintegrates.

The pale green horse does not introduce brand-new mechanisms of judgment; it gathers the destructive momentum of the first three seals and carries them to their logical, unrestrained end: society unravels.

Let me explain.

When coercive control destroys institutional trust, when polarization eliminates civic peace, and when economic violence strips away basic survival, a society becomes hyper-fragile. It loses its capacity to absorb shocks.

The breaking of the fourth Seal marks the tipping point—the moment when human systems, stripped of divine restraint, finally break under the weight of their own corruption.

When central state authority collapses within a region, you don't merely get one isolated crisis—you get several classical markers of historical state failure simultaneously. In the fourth seal of the Revelation to John, four are identified:

  • The Sword: Open, lawless conflict as warlords and factions replace formal law.
  • Famine: The complete failure of agricultural logistics and food trade.
  • Plague: Unchecked disease spreading through malnourished, displaced populations.
  • Beasts of the Earth: Nature reclaiming civil spaces when human governance and border control fail completely.

Note: Just to reiterate a point I made in a previous post, the text does not explicitly say that one-fourth of the earth’s population dies. It specifies that Death and Hades are granted authority "over a fourth of the earth." This speaks to jurisdiction and scope—a defined sphere of territory where human systems break down completely and mortality becomes the dominant, defining characteristic.

When complex civilizations decay, they rarely fall to a single shock. Instead, they follow a predictable pattern of collapse.

The is not just theoretical. This pattern has been demonstrated repeatedly in history. In macro-historical research and systems theory, this sequence is recognized as "the cascading failure model of state collapse". I believe that is what's happening when the fourth seal breaks.

The fourth seal is the result of the effects of the first three.

Within the context of the seven seals, the four horsemen are a deliberate sub-unit. We need to treat them that way.

In the only other account of horsemen used in Scripture, they patrol the earth and describe the earth as being "at rest and tranquil" (Zech 1:10-11). But here, in the Revelation to John, they describe the release of mutually reinforcing destructive dynamics that are global in scale and systemically lead to a collapse of "a fourth part of the earth".

Btw. As real-world context, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has indicated in the States of Fragility Report that more than 2 billion people currently live in regions experiencing extreme or high structural stress. This currently represents about one fourth of the earth.

When the 5th Seal opens, the vision shifts completely—from human geopolitical/social structures to an altar and spiritual realities.

And when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the testimony they had upheld. And they cried out in a loud voice, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, until You avenge our blood and judge those who dwell upon the earth?”

Then each of them was given a white robe and told to rest a little while longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, were killed, just as they had been killed.

Rev 6:9-11

I won't be emphatic about it, but I really do think the seals described in Rev 6 have begun to break.

I think we are somewhere around here in terms of the progresssion:

1st Seal -> Conquering
2nd Seal -> Removal of peace
3rd Seal -> **Economic Violence**
4th Seal -> Death
5th Seal -> Martyrdom
6th Seal -> Great Earthquake, Heavenly Signs
7th Seal -> Silence in Heaven, 7 Trumpets...
