POLYGON Command

The POLYGON command enables you to create regular polygons with 3 to 1024 sides. A regular polygon is one with sides of equal length. Let's try a pentagon. You should have a new autoCAD page open in order to carry out the following instructions.

  1. From the Draw toolbar, pick the Polygon iconwpe31.jpg (835 bytes).

Notice the <4> at the end of the Command line. This is the default value, meaning that if you were to press ENTER, AutoCAD would enter 4 for Number of sides.

wpe32.jpg (2697 bytes)

  1. Type 5 in reply to Number of sides and press ENTER.

wpe33.jpg (3182 bytes)

AutoCAD now needs to know if you want to define an edge of the polygon or select a center point. Let's use the default, Center of polygon.

wpe34.jpg (2047 bytes)

  1. With the pointing device, pick a point in an open area on the screen in response to the <Center of polygon> default. This will be the center of the polygon.

  2. Press ENTER to select the I (Inscribed) default value.

AutoCAD now wants to know the radius of the circle within which the polygon will appear.

wpe35.jpg (1596 bytes)

  1. With the pointing device, move the screen crosshairs from the center of the polygon and notice that a pentagon begins to form.

  2. Pick a point or enter a numeric value, such as .5, at the keyboard. (Entering a "0" before the decimal point is optional.)

     7. Draw several ( at least 4 more ) more regular polygons using the remaining options provided by the POLYGON command. Press the space bar to reenter the POLYGON command. Save your work as Polygon3.dwg in your file for this unit.
