One of the more popular ideas that has emerged, particularly in modern prophecy circles, is the idea that Gog is a last days leader of Magog - which some interpret to be Russia. Individuals who claim this, try to insert a separate invasion and battle prior to the final end-time battle described in the Book of Revelation. It should be noted here that historically, the Talmud and Jewish rabbinic tradition view Gog as the final enemy of God’s people who will be destroyed by the Messiah:

The final war when Gog will actually break into Jerusalem, is described in Zechariah 14. References to the wars of Gog and Magog abound in Scripture, overtly in the prophets... the longest, most detailed, and most specific accounts are contained in the books of Ezekiel, Zechariah, Joel, and Daniel. "a Commentary Anthologized from Talmudic, Midrashic and Rabbinic Sources"

I won't go into all the details surrounding this. Others, like Joel Richardson, have dealt extensively with this in his book - "The Mid-East Beast". See chapters 13, 14 and 15.

Instead, I will address those verses within Ezekiel 38 and 39 that link this Gog figure to the end times beast or antichrist described in the Book of Revelation. In addition, statements are made about this Gog invasion that could only attribute this event to the final end-of-days battle. For example:

Note that as a result of this invasion, the nations will know God.

You will come from your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly and a mighty army; and you will come up against My people Israel like a cloud to cover the land. It shall come about in the last days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I am sanctified through you before their eyes, O Gog. Ezek 38:15-16

The text in Ezekiel states that Gog was spoken of by His servants the prophets, yet this Gog figure is not mentioned by name in this context anywhere else by the prophets.  But a "Day of the Lord" adversary that invades Israel and is destroyed is spoken about extensively throughout the prophetic books of the Bible.

Are you the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them? Ezek 38:17

Both the Gog Invasion and Revelation accounts describe a great earthquake.

In My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. The fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth, and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep pathways will collapse and every wall will fall to the ground.  Ezek 38:19-20

And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon... and there was a great earthquake, such as there had not been since man came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell... And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.  Rev 16:16-19

Both accounts describe a severe hail storm:

I will rain on him and on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential rain, with hailstones, fire and brimstone. Ezek 38:22

And huge hailstones, about one hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was extremely severe. Rev 16:21

Note, that as a result of this invasion and judgement, God makes himself known in the sight of the nations.

I will magnify Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of many nations; and they will know that I am the LORD. Ezek 38:23

In both the Ezekiel and Revelation accounts, the invading army is given as food to every predatory bird.

I will give you as food to every kind of predatory bird and beast of the field. Ezek 39:4

Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men". Rev 19:17-18

Finally, note these very interesting statements regarding the Gog invasion and its outcome - in regards to Israel and the nations of the earth.

My holy name I will make known in the midst of My people Israel; and I will not let My holy name be profaned anymore. And the nations will know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel. “Behold, it is coming and it shall be done,” declares the Lord GOD. “That is the day of which I have spoken." Ezek 39:7-8

And I will set My glory among the nations; and all the nations will see My judgment which I have executed and My hand which I have laid on them. And the house of Israel will know that I am the LORD their God from that day onward. Ezek 39:21-22
