Paul said the "Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children".
Jesus, through John's account, elaborates further (John 14-17) by stating that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit about many things.
Those persistent, dare I say nagging, checks in our spirit need attention.
